From October 7th thru the 18th, I will be touring China with members of the MTSU music faculty. The group will be: Jonathan Wires, bass; Brian Mueller, drums; Don Aliquo, tenor saxophone; and Mike Parkinson, trumpet. We are also joined by Dr. Mei Han, director of the MTSU Center for Chinese Music and Culture, who will play zheng with us on a couple tunes. Check the Schedule for more details.

In August I visited Seattle for a week of recording and revelry with Kate Olson, Gary Prince, and Tim Cohen. We recorded enough material for an album, which we are currently mixing.
We also recorded a show for WEXP's Sonarchy which will be broadcast sometime in the next couple months. Stay tuned!

In May I visited Tempermill Studios in Ferndale MI with a crew of amazing improvisers. We recorded Jacob's Ladder, a composition that I wrote in 2012, in which small groupings of players emerge from the large ensemble, play together, and then are replaced by other groupings of players. It was challenging to record (getting proper headphone mixes was really important, since we couldn't all see each other), but the tracks sound great. Mixing will commence later this summer, and I hope to have a 2-disc release ready to go by the beginning of 2018.

Nov 22, 2016 - Routledge Press has published a book by Dr. Stephen Rush called Free Jazz, Harmolodics, and Ornette Coleman. This important new book features many pages of annotated interviews with Coleman, as well as 12 transcriptions. Four of those transcriptions (two of Coleman, one of Paul Bley and one of Keith Jarrett) were done by me last year.
