New Sounds for the Sixties

(no cover art)

Description

Unreleased. The tapes are in the Don Ellis collection at UCLA. The album was supposedly completed, but the Enrica label went out of business. Don't keep your fingers crossed about this one. Very slim chance of it ever seeing the light of day.

For a while, it was believed that a compilation entitled Trumpet Giants [ZYX] contained the tune "Homeless" from this unreleased Ellis album. It was found that the personnel listed on this track are Paul Bley and Steve Swallow, so more than likely, this is a mislabled tune from Out of Nowhere. But that raises another question: if this company didn't know enough about Don's music to lable the tune properly, how would they have known that there was a tune called "Homeless" on an album this obscure?

Update [6/17/04]: Quoted from the "Jazz Records" discography series by Erik Raben:

"It has not been verified whether this LP was released but at least a test pressing existed."

I'm not sure how Mr. Raben discovered this, but it is indeed exciting.
